Landlord Aron Bornstein spoke against the proposed amendments saying the amendments were unfair to landlords because tenants only had to give landlords a 30 day notice of lease non-renewal but a landlord had to give a tenant 90 day notice. He also said the 90 day day notice would effectively remove monthly leases resulting in unintended consequences.

Fair housing advocates, housing providers divided on proposed renter landlord ordinance amendments

The amendments, combined with penalties housing providers could face if they fail to meet the new standards, would drive small and medium-sized housing providers out of Evanston due to potential price increases, (Aron Bornstein) said. “A small-time landlord that gets hit with that type of penalty is going to look to exit the market,” he said. “We’re really hoping that the City Council will bite into it and act more rationally in terms of these penalties.”
